What's the difference between traditional stucco and synthetic stucco?

Traditional stucco is a cement-based plaster, usually applied in three coats over wire lath — a scratch coat, a brown coat and a finish coat. It's hard and durable but can crack as a house settles. Synthetic stucco, including EIFS (exterior insulation and finish systems), uses an acrylic finish over foam insulation board and a base coat with reinforcing mesh. It's more flexible and adds insulation, but it can trap water behind it if flashing and sealants fail, and impact damage goes through more easily.
